Looking after Khyra…

At the time Khyra’s family lived on a farm in the same community as I lived. I worked for rural homecare and was approached by my manager about providing care for this sweet little pumpkin. “Of course!!” I said without hesitation. And of course I didn’t realize what high level of care this little girl required! I along with another LPN were given extensive training in NICU and then ongoing training was provided by mom and dad on the job. Every single day was a different struggle for Khyra it seemed but through it all this little peanut never gave up, never quit smiling and plain just never quit! Not only did Khyra have many physical struggles, but living in rural Sk. also came with it’s share of obstacles. I remember the day I was working and we did a trial run with EMS. It was 15 min. from time of dispatch to their front door, in other words, seemed like a lifetime. A person doesn’t realize all that’s involved in caring for a medically fragile child at home. I was and still am amazed at Khyra’s family and their sheer willpower to provide the most loving and caring environment for this truly amazing little girl! I keep Khyra and her story very close to my heart and feel blessed that our paths crossed!
