My own story with Khyra
I met Khyra when she was 6 years old and I was at my second year nursing school. I still remember the first time when we met, Khyra tossed a toy to me then pointed at it, since she’s nonverbal, that’s the way how she expressed she wants me to play with her, even I was only a stranger to her back then. That’s how sweet she is.
Khyra is a child with lots of medical needs, throughout the 3 years I worked at bear care, she went through multiple surgeries and lots of hospitalizations, all of those a kid at her age shouldn’t go through. With the great support Khyra got, she is a strong girl and pulled  through it. I remember the days she stayed in Edmonton Children’s hospital, and the sleepless nights we had when Khyra stayed at pediatric units at Regina General Hospital, even in those days when she’s sick, she still tried to be at her best behavior and give you smiles that’d warm up your heart.
Taking care of a healthy kid is a tough thing, not to mention taking care of one with complex medical needs, it’s just a tougher journey. When God closes a door, he opens a window. With a great family, a strong mother, to support her, care for her, and advocate for her, Khyra has her chance to get the maximum out of her childhood.
One year after I left Regina, I visited Khyra for the first time, the moment when she saw me, she just gave me a big smile and then held her arm up trying to give me a hug, I was touched that she still remember me after a long year.
Khyra is born different than other children, I think what makes her different is what makes her beautiful and unique.
